Square Wheels Facilitation Tools
Using the Power of Illustrations and Images for Involving and Engaging People in Generating Ideas for Improvement
Who doesn't find a cartoon or image to be more immediately appealing
than simply listening to a presentation?
What are Square Wheels? Square Wheels is the name for our series of line-art illustrations and Lego images that are used as engagement tools to get people easily talking about their workplace and what works, doesn't work, or could work better and then proposing and discussing ideas, possibilities and innovations for improvement.
In 1993, we introduced Square Wheels One, a black and white line-art illustration (as shown above) used to represent "How most organizations really work." This main illustration was soon followed by other Square Wheels illustrations and we began selling small sets of the illustrations as facilitation tools, worldwide. Today, the Square Wheels series now includes colorful Lego images as an alternative way to represent ideas and themes.
The Square Wheels illustrations/images are available in our downloadable Toolkits and the Square Wheels theme is also represented in our Square Wheels Games and Exercises.
Why use Square Wheels? Cartoons and Images are known to quickly engage people and inspire communications and that is the power of facilitating a session around this framework. After all, what could be simpler than introducing people to the Square Wheels One illustration/image, (either above or below, respectively) by stating that "This is how most organizations really work" and then having them share their thoughts and ideas about how this scene represents what happens in organizations?
People react to what they see by quickly spinning things around and reflecting on their own workplaces, thereby, leading to a sharing of different perspectives and ideas for improvements. You quickly generate collaborative engagement and the momentum to do things differently.
Who uses Square Wheels? Anyone desiring a platform from which to ask the questions that get people talking and reacting in a productive way. Supervisors and managers are too often lacking in tools for reaching out to their people, teams or work groups in an effective way that leads to change and improvement. Square Wheels offers a solution to this by setting up a language for communicating around "Square Wheels" (what doesn't work) and "Round Wheels" (the better ideas) that establishes a safe way to discuss issues and opportunities that leads to increased communications, active involvement and a sense of ownership and empowerment for employees. A win-win for both managers and employees.
How do I get started? By purchasing the Stupidly Simple Square Wheels Facilitation Toolkit you will receive everything needed for a successful facilitation using the Square Wheels One illustration/image (both Line-Art or Lego options are given). Included are PowerPoint slides, pdf-based handouts and instructions, and ideas for facilitating a powerful session.
If you are new to presenting or would like to better improve your facilitation skills, The Square Wheels Project is an optional high-impact online training program providing usable tools and general facilitation skills.
Consider the many benefits for using Square Wheels to focus on the simple reality that many systems and processes could operate more smoothly or more effectively in every workplace and that there is a benefit to having people actively involved in sharing ideas for collaborative performance improvement. Communications about workplace practices, process improvement, and change are often difficult because of fear or a perception of criticism. However, by facilitating a session that gives participants a chance to "step back from the wagon" and gain important perspective that generates reactions, thoughts and ideas from Square Wheels illustration/images, this will help create better ways to accomplish things! #morebetterfaster!
Initiate questions ans dialogue to create opportunities for discovery! Square Wheels illustrations/images are inexpensive and quite flexible in application. And we guarantee your satisfaction!

I have been a trainer for a few years now--I would not have believed that "one" image could hold everyone's attention and bring out the discussions that took place in a 2.5 hour learning session but the Square Wheels One image was awesome!
